Joni Eareckson Tada: Sharing Hope

Disability Tips

Episode Transcription

A disability does not have to break you – it’s today’s issue on Joni and Friends.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and I will be the first to confess that when you get that bad medical report, when you learn the broken neck means paralysis, when you hear you have cancer, when any of these physical hardships hit you broadside, you can come close to breaking.

I’ve experienced all these things and Jesus is right when he said, “In this world you will have trouble.”  Friend, disability is not easy.  And it’s the little things that can get you down.  Like for instance, when I was healing from breast cancer surgery, for the longest time I wasn’t able to feed myself with my right arm.  Suddenly something that I had taken for granted for so many years was taken away from me – so the first time I sat at the dining room table with Ken having to feed me everything on my plate, well… let’s just say he had to have the Kleenex box nearby, too.

But I have learned these many years that embracing God in the midst of a physical affliction involves a lifetime of small choices.  And if you are going through a physical hardship right now, I invite you to join me in commitment to four simple things.  First, give thanks to God for great and small things.  First Thessalonians 5:18 tells us that in everything we are to give thanks.  To prevent bitterness from getting a toehold, ask God to reveal to you his blessings and then develop the practice of giving thanks for all those things, no matter how small they are.

Next, if you want to learn how to embrace God in the midst of a disability, learn to look out for other’s interests before your own.  Philippians 2 tells us to do that.  Even though a disability seems to scream for your own attention, learn to resist the temptation to always look inward, always thinking about your needs.  Show a genuine interest in those who are helping you – as you do, you’d be reflecting the attitude of Jesus.

Another tip?  Take responsibility.  Galatians 6 tells us that we need to carry the load God gives us.  Yes, there are many ways others can share your burden, but you are the one who has to face your physical limitations head-on.  So as much as possible, manage the needs surrounding your disability.  Are there things you can do for yourself?  Then do them (I’ll tell you, I was never so thankful as when I was finally able to feed myself again with my right arm).

Finally, if you want to learn how to embrace God in your physical hardship, then don’t forget to have hope in your own future.  God’s plans are not to harm your soul, but to strengthen it, to refine and mature your soul.  Ephesians 2 says that you are God’s workmanship and although you may have a physical disability, God can transform you on the inside, creating patience, perseverance, gentleness, and self-control.  Friend, our cynical world is looking for Christians who will act on their beliefs and exhibit grace in hardship, and I’d like you to join me in this challenge.  To get you started, I’ve written a 30-page booklet called “God’s Word on Disability” filled with all kinds of insights and tips… even a ready reference of the major Bible verses which speak to suffering.  It’d be great to give to someone you know who uses a wheelchair… or, take to heart the insights yourself.  It’s all yours by visiting joniandfriends.org and clicking on our radio page.  Again, that’s joniandfriends.org and ask for “God’s Word on Disability.”  After all, he does have the final word… and that word is always “hope.” Please write or visit me today at joniandfriends.org. Of course you can always call by dialing 1-888-522-5664. Here’s hoping to hear from you today.
