Episode Transcription

SHAUNA: Hi, I’m Shauna on Joni Eareckson Tada: Sharing Hope with a song from Joni about the mercies of God.

(Joni sings:)

Every morning that breaks there are mercies anew

Every breath that I take is your faithfulness proved.

And at the end of each day when my labors are through

I will sing of your mercies anew

And your mercies they will never end

For ten thousand years they remain

And when this world’s beauty has passed away

Your mercies will be unchanged

And when the storms swirl and rage

There are mercies anew in affliction and pain

You will carry me through

And at the end of my days when your throne fills my view

I will sing of your mercies anew.

Oh, how grateful I am, how grateful we all are for God's mercies, poured out on us fresh and new every morning, just like it says in Lamentations 3, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” I love that word tender mercies and compassion. Scripture tells us that Jesus was moved with compassion when he saw people hurting. He was filled with mercy and tenderness for them. Back then in Scripture it was true, and the same is true for us today.

Oh, friend, if you are going through a terrible time of pain and affliction, please don’t just think Jesus wants to work in your life in order to teach you a lesson about himself, although that may be a part of it. No, rather he is deeply moved by your pain. He’s moved by the affliction you are going through and your heartache. He has compassion for you.

Yes, through it all you will learn a few important things about yourself, and you will learn things about God, and you will learn from scripture, but even before all that it all begins with a warm-hearted compassion and tender mercy that Jesus has for you in your hardship. Suffering may be part of God’s larger and most mysterious plan, but God’s intention is always through it to demonstrate the outpouring of his compassion and unfailing love which always touches people, people like you and me at our deepest point of need.

So, friend, listening, if you know someone who needs to be reminded of the Lord’s mercies anew, God’s fresh compassion and tenderness toward them, please share today’s program with them. You can find it on joniradio.org. And then encourage each other, inspire and remind each other of God's mercies anew; his tender-hearted compassion for you and me each and every day! Oh, and if you want to learn this beautiful song by Sovereign Grace called “Mercies Anew.” Look it up on YouTube or listen to it again on joniradio.org.
