Joni Eareckson Tada: Sharing Hope

The Sound of a Cry

Episode Transcription

(Joni sings:)

Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish,
Come to the mercy seat, fervently kneel.
Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish;
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

That might be a sad song to the ears of some, but I think there are a few listening today who find that song a comfort.  When you’re aching, when nothing seems to console you, God invites you to come.  Like the song says, “Come bring your wounded heart... earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal” — that’s my favorite line in the whole hymn.

In Psalm 5, David opens his prayer by saying, “Consider my groaning, O Lord, heed the sound of my cry.”  Nobody is as in touch or in tune with the sadness in your heart as God.  The psalmist says to the Lord, heed the sound of my cry. You can say that too.

You know... just like a mother or a father knows the sound of a child’s cry... just like that parent knows whether that child is tired or if he’s waking up or by the sound, if that child wants you to come running or if he’s afraid or actually in pain... just like a parent can understand what the child wants simply by interpreting “the sound” of his crying, God is the same with you.  He knows just what our need is — even when we can’t shape the words.  God can. He can tell if it’s an urgent prayer for help, a sighing prayer of discouragement, or maybe a deep-down groan that we can only half understand ourselves.

Whatever it is, God invites you to come if you’re disconsolate... what does it mean to be disconsolate? The definition is, nothing can console you, comfort you, nothing. If you’re disconsolate, let him hear the voice of your cry, all of those deep, inexpressible fears and longings. God knows that voice of yours and just like a mother, just like a good daddy, He knows what your heart needs when you cry out to Him. So, if you’re disconsolate today, if nothing consoles you, the Lord Jesus says, “Come, come ye disconsolate, come” to Him.
